UK Resuscitation Guidelines Review – published October 2010

As expected the UK Resus Council published their five yearly review of the CPR and Choking guidelines on the 18th October. While there were no major changes to lay person protocols the Council have confirmed the need to request a defibrillator when calling for help and have included some additional protocols such as clearing unconscious casualties with an airway obstruction. The emphasis on compression only CPR if there is no ability or willingness to provide manual ventilations was also confirmed.
The teaching methods employed by our team have always covered these points and we are pleased to see that the core 2005 protocols of Basic Life Support which in our experience appears to encourage skill retention with lay first aiders has been retained. Our training materials have been updated with the minor points and all of our courses contain them.

CRT team up with Heartsine and the Defib Shop

Our team have long been fans of Heartsine AED systems – a fantastic little defibrillator that is designed and built in the UK. We can now deliver our outstanding training with an AED ownership package to groups and organisations that want to improve their staff training and first aid facilities. We are looking forward to working with them!

New CRASH CAR on the way!

Our training team is in the process of having a vehicle ‘played with’ for use on our advanced courses and in casualty simulation. The roof and doors can be removed along with sections of the chairs to allow casualties to be extricated in a variety of means on spine boards and with KED’s. Hours of fun!
Its a working progress but soon the vehicle will be ready for action.

Make up course in the pipeline

Our training team make up and effects artists are in the process of designing a course aimed at film and drama students. The course will provide information, skills and equipment to enable them to produce high quality injury simulation – this course will also be available to our large team of ‘casualties’ who assist us in creating varied and challenging scenarios for first aiders.

Hypothermia Video

The training team took to the water towards the end of summer to film and demonstrate hypothermia and its effect on the body. Records of cooling and warming along with dexterity tests were taken and the whole episode captured on film. A final video has now been edited and created for use as training material for by our team. Copies of the film have also been requested and made available to other educational organisations including University departments.
